The Stone that Was Rejected By the Builders

This meditation is based on a passage for November 30, 2010 in the Daily Lectionary Year 1 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: Luke 20:9-18

Reflection and Question: In previous meditations, I have commented on the telling of this same story by Jesus in Mark and Matthew. Luke’s particular addition to the meaning of the parable is the quoting of Psalm 118:22 claiming that the stone, which the builders rejected, becomes the chief cornerstone. Luke uses this verse again in Acts 4:11 when Peter defends his faith before the high priest and elders. In the parable and the quotation there is a recognition of the religious leaders’ hard work. Their failing isn’t in their work, but in their rejection of Jesus. What does it mean for Jesus to appreciate the work of the leaders but to challenge how they treat him?
